Straight answers to the questions travellers ask most: how to get from the airport, what to see in Famagusta, how taxis work in North Cyprus. Checked against official sources and kept up to date.
Most EMU students fly into Ercan Airport, about 44 km and 45 to 60 minutes from the Famagusta campus. During orientation EMU has met new students at Ercan, but outside those days you need the KIBHAS airport bus, which stops at EMU, or a booked taxi to your dorm door.
Famagusta is about 49 km from Ercan Airport, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car. A pre-booked taxi is the fastest door-to-door option and costs one price, agreed in advance, for up to 4 people. The KIBHAS airport bus is the cheapest (listed at 600 TL per person in November 2026) but runs on a timetable and stops at set points. Hire cars suit longer stays if you are happy driving on the left.
Uber does not operate anywhere in Cyprus, and Bolt’s Famagusta service is in the south, not in North Cyprus. In the north you book a licensed taxi by phone or WhatsApp, or take one from a rank. Agree the price before the ride: longer trips such as airport transfers are usually quoted as a fixed price for the car. The currency is the Turkish lira, but euros and pounds are widely accepted.
Part of Varosha, the abandoned resort district of Famagusta, has been open to visitors since October 2020. Entry is free. Hours follow the season, roughly 08:00 to 17:00 in winter and until 19:30 in summer. You can walk, or hire a bike or electric scooter at the entrance (paid by card). Stay on the marked routes, do not enter buildings, and do not fly drones or photograph soldiers. Bring your passport.
